I was asked to pay $34 to go with my child to another kid’s birthday party – but I don’t think I have to

ONE parent is sounding the alarm after being asked to pay $34 to accompany their child to another child’s birthday party.

A post has been shared to UK-based website Mumsnet, sparking a debate about the situation.

User arachnidpearl expressed shock and confusion when asked to pay to attend the party, which was held in the UK at a wall climbing activity center.

“Comments on this are very welcome,” the post began.

“My DS [dear son] was invited to a kid’s party on Saturday. It’s in an active place with a climbing wall, then food. Accepted invitations last week, purchased cards and gifts, etc.

“We received a message yesterday from the parent of the child whose birthday was last night saying that all children under the age of 8 must be supervised by an adult each, which is fine with me, I don’t mind saying (better not, but not the end of the world) but to stay and supervise we had to buy full price adult tickets, which cost £25.

“Is this normal? Seems a bit pompous to me.”

Users quickly joined and shared their two cents.

“No chance for me to do that,” said one user.

“Crazy, are you sure this applies to adult supervision at parties?” another said.

Some people seem to think it might be an oversight on the part of the host.

“I won’t go because it seems like a lot,” said another.

The original poster responded to some of the comments, providing more details.

“It’s just a small party anyway, maybe 8 kids? And they’re all under 8 except for the birthday kid, so all the parents will have to stay and pay.

The poster went on to say that they suspect most parents are planning on staying in defiance.

However, they don’t believe other parents would expect to spend extra money just to stay.

“Kids food and drinks seem to be part of the party,” the poster replied to one user.

“I don’t have a problem buying myself a coffee or anything but I’m opposed to paying… for the mandatory supervision of my kids that I’ll provide at a party they’re having. I’ve been invited!”

The original poster also added that she is seven months pregnant and cannot do any climbing.

The topic has received almost 550 messages.
