“I try to stay one step ahead of the hitter in terms of what he’s trying to do”

Axar Patel starred with the ball as India vindicated New Zealand. The Men in Blue defeated the Kiwis 73 times in the 3rd T20I match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Defending 185 runs, Axar made India’s first foray. He denied Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman in the third before getting better Glenn Phillips in his sequel.

The all-rounder from Gujarat emphasizes that he has been trying to change the pace that has worked wonders for him lately. Speaking at the post-match introduction ceremony, Axar Patel said:

“In the past when I was hit, I used to hit the ball faster and faster. Now I try to vary my pace. I try to be one step ahead of the batter in terms of what he’s trying to do. There is help in this racket. The ball has stopped. So I just try to hit the good areas because the club has some help.”

Axar Patel returned with a 3/9 from three passes before Harshal Patel picked up two sticks. Meanwhile Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal and Deepak Chahar each split their share to beat New Zealand in 111 runs, securing a big win.

Earlier, India banned Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan for an impressive start. Subsequent strong mid-force contributions pushed India to 184 runs, which proved too much for the Kiwis on Sunday night.
