DAVID Cameron coached King Charles for his role as monarch in a series of secret meetings, he claimed yesterday.
During his tenure, the ex-Prime Minister held audiences with the then Prince of Wales to prepare him for the top job.
Mr Cameron said the current king, like his mother, is an “excellent diplomat” and said he is a “very worthy successor” when it comes to supporting government abroad.
He added that during his tenure as Prime Minister, his wife Samantha always wanted to sit next to Charles at banquets as he was “charming company”.
Mr Cameron also said the BBC letters on issues such as the environment sent by Charles had never attempted to influence him unduly and were “entirely justified”.
In a blunder, he revealed he had issued a full apology after revealing the Queen was “purring” on the phone after Scotland rejected independence following their vote in 2014.
All of the ex-PMs were present at the accession council on Saturday, including Boris Johnson, Theresa May, Gordon Brown, Tony Blair and John Major.
Mr Cameron, speaking to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg show on Sunday, joked: “I said to Boris it’s the club nobody wants to join and you can never leave.”
Gordon Brown also revealed that his two children, Fraser and John, picked up some bad habits from the ex-monarch during a visit.
He said: “We came into the yard and all her corgis came out with her.
“And suddenly the first words my kids heard from the Queen when she spoke to her corgis was, ‘Shut up.’ They couldn’t believe it for their amazement.
“And every time we would of course reproach them over the next few months and say, ‘You have to behave,’ they would say, ‘Even the Queen says shut up, we can say that too.”
Mr Brown added that the royal family is now being slimmed down in a similar way to a Scandinavian model.
