I thought I had lost the big lottery jackpot by seconds in shock – reality twisted my feelings

A NORTH Carolina man bought a lottery ticket at a gas station last Friday but almost missed his quarter-million-dollar jackpot.

When Pernell Shoulars Jr., 44, saw someone had won the Fast Play jackpot, he thought his ticket was a loser – until the vendor selling the ticket told Pernell he was the winner.

The $272,829 winner Parnell bought a triple-win ticket for the Fast Play lottery game in North Carolina, UPI reported.

“We’re just thrilled,” Parnell, who works as a contractor, told the North Carolina Education Lottery.

The winnings are “really a blessing” for him and his wife, who was “at a convention with some friends” when she got the news and “popped a champagne to celebrate.”

During a visit to lottery headquarters on Tuesday, Parnell took home $193,739 after state and federal taxes were collected, the NC Education Lottery found.

The site also said that the odds of winning the Fast Play game are 1 in 320,000.

Each ticket from the game contributes to the size of the pot.

After a jackpot is won, Fast Play “restarts at $20,000.”

Lottery games in the US have been gaining popularity lately, with a recent Mega Millions jackpot reaching $1 billion from the pooled pool of ticket buyers.

While that pot was taken home by a single winner in Des Plaines, Illinois, there have been other winners in recent years who have taken home similarly sized jackpots.

Maureen Smith, 76, and her husband David Kaltschmidt were among three winners to bag the top Powerball prize in January 2016.

The couple, who live in Melbourne Beach, Fla., had bought a lottery ticket at their local Publix store – a ritual they’d maintained for three decades.

Maureen and David opted for a staggering pre-tax lump sum payment of a whopping $327.8 million when they received their winnings.

John and Lisa Robinson and Mae and Marvin Acosta were also among the lucky players to win the grand prize.

Among the advice that lucky multimillionaires Maureen and David gave to future winners was to wait to claim the prize and opt for a lump sum, reports Liveabout.

This year, the Mega Millions jackpot reached $1 billion. In 2016, three lucky couples each got their share of a billion dollar jackpot
