“I think they are equal”

Former French coach Raymond Domenech believes Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) ‘equal’ before the clash in the round of 16 in the Champions League. It was one of the most anticipated clashes of the season.

Both teams have faced disappointing openings in their domestic leagues earlier this week. The Parisians lost to Nice on penalties in the round of 16 Coupe de France. Meanwhile, Real Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals after a 0-1 defeat to Athletic Club.

Talking to L’Equipe on the upcoming clash in the Champions League between the two European heavyweights, Domenech said:

“I don’t really see Real Madrid’s defeat to Bilbao in the Copa de Rey making any difference, on a difficult pitch where many teams also lose. If it weren’t for the fact that PSG were knocked out by OGC Nice in the French Cup, we would think that the trend is about to be reversed. “

He added:

“But now, I think they are equal. Moreover, on the side of PSG, we will not put our hopes on this loss to Real in terms of the Champions League match.”

The first leg of the Round of 16 between the two teams will take place at the Parc des Princes on 15 February.

Real Madrid clash important for PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino

Since the beginning of the season, PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino has been under great pressure to deliver public goods.

The Ligue 1 giants have assembled a mighty squad of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Sergio Ramos and other superstars. Therefore, nothing but the Champions League is acceptable for the Parisienne club this season.

As expected, they are at the top of the Ligue 1 table with 11 points more than Nice. However, they bowed to the Coupe de France, and their performance was generally rather unconvincing.

After the loss to Nice, there were calls to sack Pocchetino and replace him with Zinedine Zidane.

Mid-season layoffs don’t seem possible anymore. However, that can completely become a reality if the Ligue 1 giants lose to Real Madrid. On the other hand, Pochettino can redeem himself if he takes PSG past Los Blancos into the round of 8.

Needless to say, it is a big tie for Pochettino’s managerial career, and especially for his future at PSG. “I think they are equal”
