I sued Walmart for self checkout theft – I accidentally skipped scanning but they wouldn’t believe it was a mistake

According to a new lawsuit, WALMART is being sued over its safety policies that allegedly target shoppers based on their race.

Marshae Jackson was shopping at the store on June 1, 2021 when she was pulled over by a security guard and arrested on charges of shoplifting.

Jackson said she used the store’s self-service checkout and had no intention of committing shoplifting, instead forgetting to scan all of her items.

However, upon notification, she had offered to go back and pay for the items the lawsuit states that the store did not allow her to do this.

“On or about June 1, 2021, Marshae Jackson was not permitted or given an opportunity to pay for items that she inadvertently failed to scan,” the Walmart lawsuit reads.

Jackson says in the lawsuit that she suffered economic, emotional and psychological harm that led to the lawsuit.

She says Walmart allows and even facilitates “disproportionate targeting of African Americans,” particularly by security personnel.

In the lawsuit, Jackson alleges that Walmart engaged in negligent wrongful prosecution, defamation, misrepresentation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and false imprisonment, and a violation of Title II of the Civil Rights Act, in addition to engaging in discriminatory practices.

“Since the incident … in connection with the court dates, Marshae Jackson has suffered and continues to suffer from great mental and physical distress,” the Walmart lawsuit reads.

Her case was dismissed without charge.

Jackson is demanding a jury trial and a restraining order.

It seeks to award actual, statutory, exemplary, and punitive damages.

This isn’t the only lawsuit against Walmart.

In January, a federal judge in New Jersey denied Walmart’s attempt to dismiss lawsuits, saying the company discriminated against applicants with criminal records.

That’s not the only problem with Walmart’s self-checkout system, either.

A lawyer has asked TikTok why she tells people never to use it and how Walmart can be after you even if you don’t intentionally shoplift.
