“I quit when I’m not wanted” – Gareth Southgate launches a fierce defense of his England tactics after “cautious” taunts

GARETH SOUTHGATE has launched a vehement defense of his tactics – and says he will quit as England boss if he is not wanted.

The Three Lions leader was no slouch after his negative criticism in last week’s 1-0 defeat by Hungary and 1-1 draw in Germany.

Ahead of Saturday’s clash with Italy, Southgate declared: “I will not go over my welcome.

“I will always have situations where people don’t agree with the selection.”

Former England striker Gary Lineker has accused Southgate of being “overly cautious” and questioned whether Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold are underused.

Southgate led England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020, where they lost to Italy on penalties.

And the England boss added: “This noise for the last two or three years seems extremely loud and I’ve had to drive it and keep it going through the Euros and all through last summer.

“I can see it’s back there. I have to deal with this. Many other international managers feel the same way.

“I’m sure the manager of Brazil has the same. I know the France manager does that and he’s won more than me. So this is the landscape.

“I have to find a balance because I don’t want to sit and be defensive, but some people have managed teams and some people haven’t.

“Until you manage teams, you have a different view of the game.”

Southgate, who started the job in 2016, signed a new contract before Christmas that runs until 2024.

He added: “We’ve done a good job for the team.

“We will continue to improve the team and also develop young players that will keep England in a good place for a long time.”

“Of course I understand for the man on the terrace paying his money that he wants to see a Grealish with a Raheem Sterling with Bukayo Saka.

“But you have to be balanced in the team – this is football at the highest level.

“That balance of reaching semis and finals was pretty good and we talked for years about why we didn’t make it.

“Perhaps that balance wasn’t where it might have been before.

“The criticism will continue – but I have to behave as I see fit. Don’t get me wrong, I use it to sense where the space is.”

And in response to his apparent underuse of some fan favourites, Southgate also pointed out that both Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden were frequently unavailable for England games.

And he added that Grealish is often on the bench for Manchester City and England.

Southgate said: “I hear about conservatism – but we were the top scorers in Europe last year. I don’t know exactly what else you can do.

“It’s not nice when you’re on the receiving end. You file it, you use it to motivate yourself, and you fully understand that it’s an integral part of being a manager.

“But I can’t let general opinion sway me or I would pick 15 players for each game and have 28 players in each squad.

“That’s the hard part – picking each player you talk about. You have to leave other players out.”

Southgate knows expectations have risen ahead of this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

He said: “I’m perfectly aware of that – and I’m perfectly calm about it. I prefer to work in a team with high expectations.

“The players have this desire and hunger.

“You’re close twice and you don’t have to worry about what the expectation is. you want it They feel the urgency, the need – they desperately want to be champions.

“For me, I’m totally aware – I’m totally calm about it. I know what is expected. I know the consequences if we don’t make it and I’m totally happy about it.”

Meanwhile, Southgate reiterated that it was humiliating that Saturday’s game against Italy will be behind closed doors following problems at the Euro 2020 final.

Up to 3,000 school children and their guardians will be admitted to Molineux to see the game.

Southgate said: “It’s an embarrassment for England as a country.

“I’m not sure a lot of the people who caused the problems were football fans.

“The vast majority of our fans who traveled to Germany this week behaved brilliantly.”
