A CUSTOMER was left stunned and confused after receiving a package from Amazon containing a deadly weapon.
Don Thompson, 78, is a regular user of the online store, but a recent order for a screen door went horribly wrong when a .20-caliber shotgun was shipped to his home.
Pictures show the gun was delivered to his home in Colorado, USA, with the package tracking code matching the original order.
The former law enforcement officer told CBS News Colorado he couldn’t understand Amazon’s mistake.
He said: “I was absolutely stunned.
“You don’t often misunderstand her.
“But this is terrifying, absolutely terrifying to me.
“I don’t want a gun, I just want my screen.”
Thompson said he ordered a roll of fiberglass cloth on July 30.
A few days later, the courier UPS delivered the package from Amazon to his door, but it contained a Stoeger shotgun.
He said the delivery shocked him because such a mix-up could have put the firearm in the hands of a criminal or person with ill intentions.
Reports confirm that the tracking number he was given for his mesh order was the same tracking number that appeared on the shotgun box.
The shipping label stated that the firearm was shipped from an Amazon fulfillment center in Aurora, Illinois.
Amazon said it does not stock or sell firearms.
An internal investigation has begun, and Amazon emailed Thompson: “I’m terribly sorry to hear that we sent you a firearm instead of the screen you purchased.
“This is certainly not what we want our customers to expect and I can assure you the firearm was shipped unintentionally.
“We are conducting an internal investigation into the errors that led to this shipment from our fulfillment center to ensure this does not happen to any other customer.”
Once the gun was identified, the Colorado man contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, who came to his home and took custody of the shotgun.
County officer Jenny Fulton said the investigation is ongoing.
She said: “It seems that it [shotgun] was stolen, but we’ve only just begun our investigation and it seems there’s still a lot to unravel.”
Amazon is assisting the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
In the meantime the company credited Thompson with £200 and reimbursed the cost of the screen fabric.
