I live off the grid in a floating house – people always ask how we do our jobs but the hardest part is never what people think

A COUPLE in North Carolina live in an off-grid floating home and the couple have been documenting their alternative lifestyle on social media.

The couple are currently building a new floating cabin that will have more space and will be in the same port.

Brandon and Sarah (@keepingafloatwthejoneses) have been living in their cabin with their dog Iko for a little over two years.

The couple were asked by a follower how they go about their chores and errands, including doing the laundry.

Sarah posted a video showing a range of chores and how to adapt them for life away from home.

She first filmed herself changing the sheets on the couple’s double bed, which is no different on the floating home.

However, doing laundry is a different story due to the energy consumption.

The two have solar panels on the roof to supplement much of their energy.

But since washing is such a great source of energy, the couple has to turn to other means.

Sarah wrote: “We use a generator when we do laundry to supplement our solar power.

“Laundry is our greatest attraction.”

In the video, Sarah films herself plugging in the generator from a box outside to do the laundry.

When the generator needs fuel, the two “boat over to the marina.”

She filmed the short ride with Iko standing at the bow of the tiny boat.

At the same time, Brandon throws away the trash to make the most of the drive to the landing.

Upon their return, it’s time to clean out the wood-burning stove, which the couple says is “wonderful but messy.”

While Sarah cleans up the ashes from the night before, Brandon chops wood for the next fire.

Finally, the couple must adjust the winch to the anchor and mooring lines.

They said, “This lake sways a whopping 60 feet, so this is our most important chore of the year!”

Instead of paying any rent, the couple only has to pay a mooring fee once a year, which is “very cheap”.

One viewer wrote: “I’d love to do this…I’m sure it’s a lot of work but it’s worth it.

The pair replied: “I would say that sums it up. Not always easy or convenient, but always 1000% worth.”

The couple confirmed their floating cabin is in Lake Fontana after another viewer said: “Now that’s alive.

“And especially when this is on Fontana, beautiful land and scenery, living the dream.”

Brandon and Sarah regularly try to convince followers to start their own alternative life journey.

One follower wrote: “I wish I could live like this.”

The couple said: “Why not? It’s out there! Don’t give up too soon.

“Our bills are only a few hundred dollars a month. The initial cost was less than that of a single width trailer!

“The location plays a big role. Can definitely be an expensive lifestyle in some places (Seattle, Key West, etc.) but insanely cheap in others.”
