‘I have no idea…’ – Neville slams Ten Hag for hitting giants Haaland 5ft 10 at Eriksen in Man Utd derby

GARY NEVILLE slammed Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag after Christian Eriksen was spotted taking a corner against Erling Haaland in Manchester City’s 6-3 win on Sunday.

After Phil Foden gave the hosts an early lead at the Etihad, the Red Devils had to defend a corner eleven minutes from half-time.

And they were an exhausted unit in defense as centre-back Raphael Varane was dealt treatment when the set piece was taken.

The Frenchman would have covered for City striker Haaland so it was up to the other United players to figure out who would corner him.

For some reason, diminutive Eriksen – who stands at just 5ft 10inches – was chosen as the man to attempt to stop the gargantuan 6ft 5 at Haaland.

Unsurprisingly, it didn’t work.

Haaland shook off Eriksen with ease before vaulting over Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot to head in past David de Gea.

Tyrell Malacia did his best to hook the ball away on the goal line but by the time he deflected it clearly it was already over.

And Neville was stunned by United’s decision to have Eriksen Haaland tagged.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ comment, he said: “I have no idea why Eriksen tagged him at that early stage and the rest of them stand still when he’s on the move.

“Eriksen doesn’t get along with him physically. He gets up so early, he’s so strong and his technique is brilliant.”

Haaland scored again three minutes later before completing his hat-trick in the second half.

Since arriving in England, the Norwegian has scored 17 goals in just 11 games.

And he has already scored three Premier League hat-tricks in just eight games.

Meanwhile, the Manchester derby result ended United’s run of four straight league wins.

Next up for Ten Hag’s men is a trip to Omonia in the Europa League on Thursday before their encounter with Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side host Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday and meet Southampton at the Etihad three days later.
