“Walking on stage in a tiny bikini and high heels, I could hear the cheers from the audience as everyone turned their eyes to me.

I confidently posed, showing off my toned body, my skin covered with a layer of tanned water that sparkled under the bright lights.

Two years ago, I would have laughed if someone had told me I was going to enter a bodybuilding competition – but a tragedy prompted me to change my life.

I hit rock bottom in August 2018 when my mother Gwen, 75, died suddenly from a brain aneurysm.

She is my best friend and the pain is unbearable.

I turned to drinking bottles of wine every day and smoking cigarettes to ease the pain.

I closed myself off and at times, I didn’t know how I could go on.

My anxiety was heightened when 10 days later, my son, Christian, 22, left home to go to university in Scotland.

It seems like my purpose in motherhood has pretty much disappeared, even though I’ve been busy with makeup.

Four days later, it was Mother’s funeral.

My partner suggested I talk to my GP about antidepressants, but I wanted to change myself, so in December, at 52, I decided to get back into the gym.

As a naturally slim person, around 12-14 all my adult life, I don’t hate what I see in the mirror.

But I smoked, drank, ate what I liked, and never really exercised.

I hope that changing my lifestyle will help me move forward emotionally.

I searched for inspiration on the internet and discovered a fitness tournament with categories for people over 45.

The UFE Open Bikini Masters 45 features highly athletic athletes with low body fat, and they’ll be judged on everything from their muscle tone to their appearance.

However, the competition only ran for nine months.

Stepping onto the stage in glamorous makeup and sparkly bikini, I felt nervous, but I knew my co-star and sister were cheering in the crowd.

I feel appalled, but this is definitely something I have to do to stay focused.

Friends and family were stunned but supportive when I told them.

In January 2019, I gave up alcohol and smoking and signed up with an online fitness trainer who gave me exercises to do at my local gym.

I felt old and ignorant when I started walking – I didn’t know what a lot of equipment was.

But I soon did four-hour-a-week workouts, two upper body sessions and two lower body workouts.

I work out at home in between gym sessions and take pose lessons with my trainer to hone my presentation for the competition.

I also overhauled my diet. In the past, I used to eat jam with toast for breakfast, sandwiches and chips for lunch, and pasta for dinner.

But my trainer swapped out my usual meals for protein yogurt with oatcakes and blueberries, tuna with brown rice and salad, and chicken, vegetables, and sweet potatoes.

By April, I could see more clearly in my arms and legs, and as the months passed, I realized I had a perfect six pack. I feel very proud.

In September 2019, it’s time to compete in London.

I could see better in my arms and legs, and as the months passed, I realized I had the perfect six pack. I feel very proud.

When my name was announced as a bronze medalist, I was shocked but delighted at how far I had come.

I thought of Mom and knew she would be proud that I had found a way out of the black hole I fell into after her death.

After the contest, I set up an Instagram account to motivate myself and show everyone that age is not a barrier to getting in shape.

Soon I had more than 1,000 followers.

Last September, I entered the second contest and was surprised when I won the silver prize.

Next, I went looking for gold.

My friends and family are so proud of me – especially Christian, who practices with me when he comes home from college.

Strength training got me out of the darkest time I’ve ever had – and now I’m in the best shape of my life in every way. ”

BTW

Reality TV star Jodie Marsh, now 43, started bodybuilding in 2009 and went from a size 12 to a size 6 before her first competition, losing 20lb of fat.

Loose Women star Saira Khan, 51, is looking to enter a bikini competition to show what “ordinary” women can achieve.
