A GRANDMOTHER found £28,000 in a used sofa she bought online – but what she decided to do with the money was divided.
Vicky Umodu, from Colton, California, discovered the wads of money hidden in a pillow after finding the sofas while looking for furniture for her new home.
She told ABC7: “I scrolled down and saw free articles.
“So I clicked on it and the first thing that came to mind was this family who wanted to give away a sofa and everything in their bedroom.
“I said maybe it’s a gimmick, so I called her.”
Craigslist sellers gave away the two sofas and a chair for free after cleaning out the home of a recently deceased loved one – but they were unaware of the hidden cash load.
Vicky said: “I just moved in and I don’t have anything in my house.
“I was so excited so we picked it up and brought it in.”
Shortly after returning the couches to her house, she noticed something odd in one of the pillows.
At first Vicky thought it was a heat pad.
But when she opened the pillow, she found a stack of large envelopes filled with thousands of pounds of cash.
Vicky said: “I just told my son come on, come on! I screamed, this is money! I have to call the guy.”
Without thinking, she decided to return all the money to the family.
“God has been kind to me and my children, they are all alive and well,” she said.
“I have three beautiful grandchildren, so what can I ever ask of God?”
In a kind gesture, the family gave Vicky £2,000 to buy a new fridge.
“I didn’t expect a dime from him, I wasn’t,” she said.
But Vicky’s decision to return the money divided opinion online.
Some said she should have kept the money, while others agreed she did the right thing.
One said: “Definitely did the right thing.
“My late mother-in-law had dementia and was hiding money all over the house – around £13,000 in total.
“It’s sad to read that some people would have kept it or would consider keeping it.”
Another wrote: “What a beautiful honest woman.”
But a third said: “Should have kept it quiet, this family should be ashamed of themselves for only giving her £2,000.”
And another asked: “Why did she have to tell anyone?”
The family said they found other amounts of cash in the rest of the house – but only a few hundred pounds.
They weren’t sure why their relative had hidden so much money in and around the house.
