But the defeat was made even more painful when skipper Harry Kane, who had previously equalized from a penalty, blasted a late penalty over the bar.

The striker and his team-mates broke down in tears after the final whistle – but the north London club had other things on their minds.

Despite being part of the England squad, Bukayo Saka, who was fouled in the build-up to France’s opener, and Aaran Ramsdale shared a photo of Frenchman William Saliba with his country’s flag around his neck.

And Arsenal captioned the tweet: “Our Wilo. A World Cup semi-finalist.”

Followers immediately hit back at the Premier League leaders’ Twitter account as they blasted the tweet.

“Not your best decision posting this,” beamed one, as another said: “Read the space.”

One football fan wrote: “I don’t want to be an Arsenal fan right now.”

“Pathetic,” slammed another. “You are an English team.”

Those sentiments were echoed by hundreds more, with another Twitter user saying: “This is not the right time for an English club to think about it. I am very disappointed.”

While another said: “Sometimes it’s good to take a breath before pushing after these situations. What did you think?”

Saliba, 21, is part of Didier Deschamps’ squad in Qatar.

His only appearance at the World Cup, however, was the final dead group game, where France were defeated 0–1 by Tunisia.
