‘I didn’t know I scored the goal’

CAOIMHIN KELLEHER has had to be reminded that he has won the ‘crazy’ Carabao Cup for Liverpool.

Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp told the Irish hero that his name will now be placed alongside other legendary goalkeepers on a special wall of the training ground.

Kelleher scored the 11th goal and the decisive penalty kick under great pressure when a tense clash with Chelsea resulted in a surprise penalty shootout.

“It was a crazy thing,” he said. I think I saved someone. I came close to a couple of penalties but when it came to me I didn’t realize I had scored the winning one.

“I forgot that I scored the winning goal. All the penalties from the players were class so I was happy to score.

“I got my hands on a few penalties but all the penalties were very high quality but thankfully we won.

“The manager said ‘Good job for scoring the goal’. Apparently there’s a wall in Liverpool to all the goalkeepers who won the trophy and he said “now is your chance to have it”. “

Kelleher – who was a striker in his teens – helped Klopp win his first domestic cup and first in a decade for Liverpool.

“It’s been quite a journey from the boy I first saw to the man I am now,” said Klopp. For the first time I saw great potential. Development is top class.

Alisson Becker is the best in the world for me, but Caoimhin Kelleher is the best No2 for me.

“The game he played tonight was absolutely unbelievable. He made two incredible saves – maybe more. He proved his decision to queue was absolutely right. Top class.

“They call this everyone’s cup and it’s fun to celebrate with everyone but it’s been a journey for the whole team.

“Fighting is like two lions hunting for each other. At the start of the game, Chelsea were obviously the better player but after that we dominated.

“It is good. We were here and lost the final on penalties six or seven years ago. But no one talked about it. That’s the life of a professional athlete.

“We have more experience. In 120 minutes you can’t keep Chelsea back and they took a chance and I’m really happy.

“Congratulations for us as it is the first time for this group but the ninth for the club. The fans were delighted with tonight’s thing.

“We really loved it and it’s been a pleasure to have the opportunity to celebrate with everyone.”

A thrilling game seen FOUR Goals were disallowed for goalscoring and Klopp admitted that the judges still did not approve him on VAR.

“It’s not our favorite subject,” he said. It’s a bit confusing – there’s clearly room for improvement.

“They’ve got more unauthorized targets than us so it must be harsh for them.”
