The Pro Football Hall of Fame also announced his death in a press release.

Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1970, McElhenny was known as an all-around athlete with runner, receiver and kick returner skills that made him one of the top players in the NFL at the time.

He was named Rookie of the Year in 1952 before it was an official honor and made two All-Pro teams, six Pro Bowls and the 1950s All-Decade roster.

“Hugh McElhenny was a threat offensively in all phases of the game — as a rush, as a pass taker, and as a kick-and-punt returner,” Hall of Fame President Jim Porter said in a statement.

“His all-round talent — evident to pro football scouts when Hugh was just a teenager — will be celebrated and forever cherished in Canton.”

The San Francisco 49ers, the team McElhenny played for from 1952 to 1960, released a statement after the news of his death.

“The 49ers family is heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of the NFL’s greats, Hugh McElhenny,” said Dr. John York, Co-Chairman of the 49ers.

“Growing up, the 49ers were my favorite team. I remember so many great players from the late 50’s and 60’s. When I started inviting an alum to every game, my goal was to hit the million dollar backfield.

“Hugh was the last of the four to join us and we remained friends for a long time after that. Hugh is a big part of 49ers history.”

With the 49ers, McElhenny was known as a “franchise saver.”

“It was questionable whether our franchise could survive,” said Lou Spadia, a former general manager. “McElhenny has cleared all doubts. That’s why we call him our franchise savior.”

The Niners only made it into the postseason once with McElhenny, when they lost to Detroit in the 1957 Western Conference title playoff game.

He played with the Minnesota Vikings from 1961-62, played a solid season and reached the Pro Bowl when the Vikings won 3-11 in their inaugural season.
