A GROUP of giant whale sharks measuring up to 40 feet in length have been sighted on a popular beach.
Noah Gunn said he and his group spotted the whale sharks while fishing Thursday.
Gunn told WFLA the sharks swam to the boat he was fishing on with others.
“One absolutely pulled in our 28-foot boat,” Gunn told the outlet.
He believed that a shark was between 35 and 40 feet long.
“It was wider than the boat as it swam under us,” he added.
He captured video of the sharks as they approached and sent it to WFLA.
Gunn hasn’t seen any whale sharks before, he told the outlet.
“How insignificant something like these animals can make you feel,” Gunn said.
“I felt tiny!”
Gunn was fishing off the coast of Anna Maria Island in Florida.
Whale sharks have also recently been sighted in other parts of Florida.
Two Tampa Bay boaters let a whale shark swim alongside them while on the water in Sarasota in late May.
Whale sharks were sighted in Madeira Beach about a week earlier.
“We seem to be finding whale sharks more often, or at least those encounters are recorded more often because everyone has an iPhone or a GoPro and great shooting opportunities,” Eric Hovland, assistant curator and shark guide at the Florida Aquarium, told FOX13.
