A man and a woman have been arrested and charged in connection with the murder of a lesbian couple.
The dismembered body parts of Yulizsa Ramírez and Nohemí Martínez, from Texas, were found in a roadside plastic bag in Chihuahua, Mexico on January 17th.
Mexican authorities initially said their murder was not a hate crime, but several LGBTQ+ groups have called for justice over their deaths, according to the report. Washington Post.
Suspects Jaqueline Isela CR and David R were arrested by police.
Their last names have yet to be revealed by the authorities, Everyone report.
They are said to have contacted the couple on January 15 and taken them to a home in San Isidro.
Police believe the killings took place at the site, adding that they found “sufficient evidence” when a search warrant was executed.
The suspects will appear in court on January 28.
Ramírez and Martínez were found by the roadside between Ciudad Juarez and the town of El Porvenir.
The bags were found about 17 miles apart.
According to El Diario, they were in the city visiting family at the time of their death.
The couple, of unknown age, live in the city of El Paso, across the border in southern Texas, and were married on July 20, 2021.
They have three young children, two girls and a boy, who are now orphans.
Their names and ages have yet to be released to protect their privacy.
It was not disclosed if they were adopted or if they were a biological child of a woman and conceived using a donor.
Officials are concerned that the murders may go unsolved.
Karen Arvizo, director of the Chihuahua Sexual Diversity Commission, told DailyMail.com: “The worrying thing is that the authorities will do absolutely nothing.
“We feel like we’re being treated like second-class citizens and it really doesn’t matter.”
Police also found two other women in bags in another neighborhood in Juarez.
A woman in the second discovery was found dead at the scene.
The second woman was found alive, crying, but later dead, according to Juarez officials.
According to El Diario, these women were all tortured and shot.
They were discovered at the intersection of Cuauhtémoc y Nombre de Dios in the Patria-Zaragoza neighborhood.
The women, who have not been identified, are between 30 and 35 years old.
It is not known whether the murders are related.
At least 65 murders have been reported in Ciudad Juarez, according to crime data reviewed by El Diario.
And, more than 1,400 of the 2,476 homicides registered in Chihuahua took place in Ciudad Juarez.
