NEW discoveries have been made in the case of a missing man whose burned truck was discovered a day after he disappeared in 2016.
Police believe human remains found Tuesday may be linked to Simon Powell’s disappearance.
Powell was last seen on June 1, 2016. His burned truck was found the next day.
The search for Powell has spanned years, with the discovery of the remains being one of the latest twists in the case.
Investigators had drained a pond off Highway 56 and found the remains buried in the mud with cadaver dogs and other tools, reports FOX54.
The remains are sent to a laboratory for identification.
According to local reports, several ponds had been searched in recent weeks.
The investigation into Powell’s disappearance continues as new possible suspects in the case have been identified.
The searches came after authorities spoke to and arrested Stacey Welch, who MPs now face charges of murder, armed robbery and kidnapping, according to MPs.
Authorities continue to investigate Welch’s connection, if any, to Powell.
Meanwhile, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office told WRDW that two new people are being sought for questioning and one other has been arrested.
Speaking to the outlet, Captain Jimmy Wylds Crystal named Gail Mundy Simmons, 43, and Randall Eugene Johnson, 62, as people investigators wanted to speak to.
Simmons is currently behind bars in Alabama for an unrelated crime, authorities said.
Johnson was in North Carolina and authorities plan to speak to him.
Another person, Mitchell Lanell Lambert, 39, was arrested in connection with Powell’s disappearance
Lambert faces charges of murder, kidnapping and armed robbery, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office said.
Years after Powell’s disappearance, his family has more questions than answers.
“We just don’t understand why,” Juanita Powell, a daughter-in-law, told WRDW.
“We need a closure”
