Huge Baftas blunder sees wrong winner announced – but he’s been erased from TV footage

Troy, 54, who has been deaf since birth, was escorted onto the stage by his interpreter to announce the winner.

However, a major mistake saw the wrong winner being announced to the audience in an awkward turn of events.

Instead of reading out Kerry Condon as the winner, the interpreter mistakenly said the gong belonged to Carey Mulligan.

While Troy was signing Carey to his interpreter, the wrong name was read out to the celebrity audience.

The BBC cut the moment from footage shown to fans at home as the announcer quickly corrected the mistake.

A backstage source told The Sun: “Troy signed the name correctly but his interpreter got it slightly wrong.

“Accidents happen and it was a real mistake that was quickly cleared up.”

Kerry, 40, took the gong for her role as Siobhán Súilleabháin in The Banshees Of Inisherin.

It was the first major blunder at the awards show since the 2017 Academy Awards, when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly announced La La Land as the best picture winner.

Onstage, Condon paid tribute to director Martin McDonagh, adding, “Thank you for all the roles you’ve given me throughout my career.

“You make me so proud to be Irish.”
