Players view the game world based on visible distances that determine how far they see in each direction. Render distance declares the number of blocks that we can view. The Java version sets this to 12 by default, producing a huge 52,015,104 blocks to be processed per frame.
By reducing render distance we minimize the number of blocks made, resulting in better fps as it has less processing and increased rendering speed. You can change the display distance by entering ‘game options’ and ‘install video’. A value of 10 is an average value that gives a good performance boost without adversely affecting gameplay.
There are a lot of settings we can change to improve gameplay. Go into game options and select ‘video settings’. This is where you can adjust the settings used when rendering. In rare cases you may need to increase the ‘maximum frame rate’ or disable vsync. Both settings limit the number of frames displayed. Remember that the more image detail you want, the greater the performance.
Latency is a problem in multiplayer games, and Minecraft is no exception. Lag describes a wide range of network-based performance problems, although it is incorrectly used to describe a more general range of problems. Locating a particular problem is very difficult and we often do little because the problem is beyond our control. Here are some steps we can take to minimize network problems.
Make sure that you keep your network drivers up to date. In general, this is a good practice, as bugs often trace their origins back to outdated software. Vendors tend to fix problems quickly and often deploy them automatically or in Operating System updates. When updating, always check that it comes from a trusted source, such as the original equipment manufacturer or operating system vendor.
If you’re using the same network cables you started using ten years ago, it might be time to replace them. Old and faulty cables can degrade and lead to loss of signal that requires information to be sent over and over again.
Make sure you are connecting to the correct access point. Chances are, you have one or more open APs in range, and your wireless devices sometimes connect to them by accident. In addition to any security risk, open APs often perform poorly due to the number of connected devices or the distance between them. The further away you are, the worse it will be. Set your computer to ignore unknown APs and only connect to known networks. Where could be, use newer network protocols. The 5ghz network has several advantages. They are less congested than 2.4ghz and have more bandwidth for your connection.
Turn off Downloads (on other devices)
The more congested your network, the more likely your game will struggle to send data efficiently and without loss. They can cause data loss or delay, adversely affecting your experience. A common cause of bottlenecks is background update tasks that are downloading updates without your knowledge. Make sure you don’t update or preload the game and press the pause button while playing. Don’t forget to check any other computers or consoles on the same network. Even in standby mode some running tasks can affect everything.
Avoid ‘busy’ areas
This affects single-player and multiplayer games, and refers to any area where there’s a lot going on. Player towns, redstone constructions, and complex construction projects are all examples of things that can cause problems. Remember that the more Minecraft does, the longer it takes to render frames. Even on servers we can have problems. Busy servers will take longer to send player updates. The local game client may work fine, but the game will experience intermittent updates, thus providing a sporadic experience.
Mob farms can also negatively affect performance if still active. Try to build an off switch in your design to disable farms and prevent too many mobs from spawning. You will also need to deal with excess drop items. Instead of leaving items lying there, redirect any leftover potion into the lava for destruction and removal from the game. Too many mobs and items will negatively affect the area.
Minecraft creates worlds as you explore. It handles the current fragment and the things around you. If you’re moving fast, the game queues pieces to create and can quickly add up. Some terrains can cause more problems than others.
We can work around this by pre-generating the terrain before playing.
