THE QUEEN is now 96 and preparing to celebrate her platinum anniversary as the longest-reigning female monarch in history.
As Empress, her birthday is celebrated twice a year, but how old is Her Majesty and when was she crowned?
How old is Queen Elizabeth II?
The Queen is 96 years old, making her the oldest monarch to have reigned in Britain.
She overtook Queen Victoria as the longest-reigning monarch in 2015 – Victoria had served 63 years and lived to be 81.
Her Majesty is also the oldest reigning monarch in world history.
She became our sovereign on June 2, 1953.
Apart from a milestone celebration, the Queen traditionally spends her actual birthday privately.
Her birthday will be celebrated with public gun salutes at places such as Windsor Great Park, the Tower of London and Hyde Park.
When is the Queen’s real birthday?
The Queen has two birthday celebrations each year: one on her actual date of birth and the other on her ‘official’ birthday – a public celebration.
Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21, 1926, but her second birthday changes every year.
The tradition of monarchs having two birthdays was started by George II in 1748.
There’s a simple reason for the double birthday and it’s because of how moody the UK weather is.
Back then, George was born in November and thought it was too cold to have an annual parade at that time.
He decided to combine his birthday celebrations with a military parade called Trooping the Color, held in the spring.
For convenience, it usually takes place on a Saturday in June, often on the second weekend.
In 2022, however, Trooping the Color will take place on a Thursday as part of Platinum Jubilee weekend – June 2nd
The four-day bank holiday weekend starts on June 2nd and ends on Sunday 5th June 2022.
In what year was Queen Elizabeth II crowned Queen of England?
Elizabeth was only 25 when she became Queen of England, but she was 27 at the time of her coronation.
She took over the leading role after the death of her father King George VI. on February 6, 1952.
The coronation took place on June 2, 1953.
It was more than a year after the king’s death as it was considered inappropriate to host the celebration during his mourning period.
During the ceremony, the Queen took an oath to serve the people of the Commonwealth according to their respective laws and customs, and she was anointed with holy oil.
The anniversary celebrates her official birthday and 70 years as sovereign of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Queen Elizabeth II is the first British monarch to celebrate her platinum jubilee.
