According to the National Careers Service, the average surgeon’s salary varies and depends on how experienced the doctor is.

For a surgeon starting out, the average salary is estimated at £24,214 per year.

However, for those with experience, their paycheck is a reflection of the incredibly important work they do.

An experienced surgeon can expect to earn around £104,972 a year.

How do I become a surgeon?

To become a surgeon, you must first earn a series of accreditations in order to qualify.

You must complete the following:

• A five-year medical degree recognized by the General Medical Council
• A two-year foundation program of general education
• Two years basic surgical training in a hospital
• Up to six years of professional training.

If you already have a first grade or upper second grade science degree, you can embark on a 4-year entry-level path into medicine – some institutions also accept non-science graduate degrees.

You need the following admission requirements for the application:

• At least 5 GCSEs grades 9 to 7 (A* or A) including English Maths and Science
• Three high school diplomas or equivalent, including biology and chemistry
