The pay a driver receives depends on the company they work for.
The average train driver earns in the UK is around £59,000 as of 2022.
Train drivers are not represented by the RMT.
Train Travel Assistants
This includes ticket collectors, guards and information staff.
According to the Department for Transport (DfT), the average wage for these workers is £33,310.
Track construction and maintenance companies
These are the people who maintain and repair tracks.
The average wage for these workers is £34,998, according to the DfT.
Railway employees
These include signal transmitters and driving assistants.
According to the DfT, the average salary for one of these workers is £48,750.

According to RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch, the average railway cleaner earns around £32,000 a year.
It was pointed out that over 1000 union members are cleaners who are not classified as railway workers by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
What qualifications do you need to become a railroad worker?
This depends on the role you are applying for.
To become a train driver, a person applying must have either GCSEs of grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) or equivalent grades in English and Maths, or a completed apprenticeship.
The applicants then receive at least one year of training.
Applicants for other positions, such as B. working in a railway station would require the same standard of GCSE qualifications.
However, successful applicants will be asked to attend an assessment day where they will be interviewed and tested on their math, communication and customer service skills.
