He entered the school just after 9:30 a.m. local time, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, two semi-automatic pistols and several rounds of ammunition.
It was later revealed that the guns were legally purchased from his mother and registered under her name.
Nancy’s friend Mark Tambascio told the New Haven Register at the time that her interest in guns had grown in the years leading up to her death.
“She took up target shooting as a hobby about three years ago,” he said.
“She hasn’t spoken to me much about it. Just ‘Oh, I went to the shoot today,’ you know. Nothing else.”
Before police arrived at the scene, Lanza turned the gun on himself and committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

What happened as a result of the school shooting?
The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting shocked the nation in 2012 and remains an important part of history to this day.
As a result of the deadly event, then-President Barack Obama signed 23 executive orders and proposed 12 gun control measures to Congress.
The Connecticut General Assembly also passed a 139-page gun control bill with broad bipartisan support, which was signed into law by then-Governor Dannel Malloy the same day.
The bill will require universal background checks on all firearm purchases and a high-capacity magazine ban that prohibits the sale or purchase of ammunition magazines that can hold more than ten rounds of ammunition.
Unfortunately, Sandy Hook did not prevent other mass shootings.
Since then, there have been over 2,600 mass shootings nationwide, including several other school shootings, according to Vox.

In 2018, a former student at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida opened fire on students, killing 17 people.
On May 24, 2022, another deadly school shooting occurred, killing 15 people.
