On May 31, 2022, a 47-year-old man, later identified as Sean Thomas McGuinness, was found dead with a severed arm at John S. Taylor Park in Largo, Florida.

Paul Cozzie, the director of Parks and Conservation Resources in Pinellas County, told the New York Times that “he died as a result of an alligator attack,” which marked the first deadly alligator attack in Florida since 2018.

“It seems he went in before the park opened – unfortunately not a good time to be in a lake, but especially during alligator mating season,” Cozzie said, adding that it “was a mistake that.” apparently cost him his life. ”

A few weeks later, on June 26, Fox News reported that a South Carolina man was killed after an 11-foot alligator attacked and dragged him into a retention pond.

Those two deaths mark the first in 2022, but there have been multiple attacks in between.

While an exact number is unclear, there have been at least five attacks in which people have survived.

On June 22, Samuel Ray told WRAL that he was attacked by an alligator while playing tag near a Florida pond.

“It was about a foot from the water,” Ray said.

“And then as soon as I put my hand on the ball, I bent down and picked it up. Then I saw the alligator’s eye.

Just days before Ray’s attack, a man sustained non-life-threatening injuries while rescuing his dog from an alligator attack, according to the WCSC.

How can I avoid an alligator attack?

When you find yourself in alligator territory, there are a few things you can do to avoid being attacked by the large reptiles.

Here’s what you can do, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:

  • Stay in designated swimming areas
  • Swim only during the day, as alligators are most active between dusk and dawn
  • Now allow your pets to swim or drink from potentially alligator infested waters
  • Do not feed or lure alligators
  • Stay away from alligators

If you are bitten by an alligator, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends fighting back and seeking immediate medical attention.

As of November 2021, Florida has seen an average of eight unprovoked bites per year, but the risk of being seriously injured in an unprovoked incident is about one in 3.1 million, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission notes. How many alligator attacks took place in 2022?
