How is Jimmy Carter?

On October 1, 2022, Jimmy Carter celebrated his 98th birthday, making him the oldest living former US President.

Carter was born on October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia. After graduating from college, Carter was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of enlisting in the Navy.

It was in the Navy that Carter learned most about nuclear physics, which shaped his policy regarding nuclear weapons in the future.

While in the Navy, the death of Carter’s father spurred him to retire from active duty and take over the family’s peanut farm.

While the peanut farm was quite a start, Carter and his wife were able to make it a success shortly after taking over.

He then served as governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, and his tenure brought about major changes in school integration.

Carter was also keen on simplifying government, turning over 300 state agencies into just 22 during his tenure.

One of Carter’s most controversial decisions was his veto of a dam on the Flint River. This went against the wishes of the US Army.

Carter was eligible for re-election, but gave up a second term in favor of a more national position in office.

On February 18, 2023, the Carter Center took to Twitter to issue an official statement regarding his medical condition saying: “Following a series of brief hospitalizations, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend the rest of his time at home with his family and seek hospice care in lieu of additional medical procedures,” the statement said.

“He has the full support of his family and medical team.”

The post ended by saying, “The Carter family requests privacy at this time and is grateful for the concern of its many admirers.”

When was Jimmy Carter President of the USA?

Carter was elected president in 1976, defeating incumbent President Gerald Ford.

One of the government’s biggest focuses has been the energy crisis America is facing.

In the last year of his presidency, Carter faced the Iran hostage crisis, which contributed in part to his failed re-election.

52 Americans were held hostage in Iran for over 400 days and released immediately after Ronald Reagan’s presidency.
