Since first appearing in 1973, the Safety Cars have been a great way for manufacturers to get their fine engines onto TV screens.

But they also play a key role in keeping riders safe in what is a very dangerous sport.

What is the F1 Safety Car?

The job of the safety car is to limit the speed of the cars on the circuit so the workers can get out and pick up debris or crashed cars.

This means that the cars can back up behind the safety car.

Drivers are not allowed to overtake the safety car while it is on the track until indicated.

At this point, the safety car distracts from the track and the drivers can race again.

He made 14 appearances in the 2021 Formula 1 season.

But the safety car provided a contentious end to the season after a crash allowed Max Verstappen to put on a new set of tires and overtake Lewis Hamilton with one lap to go.

Sometimes drivers get into the safety car to catch a lift back to the pits when they crash their own car.

Which car manufacturer produces the F1 Safety Car?

Formula 1 uses the Aston Martin Vantage that was used in Bahrain.

But F1 also uses the Mercedes-AMG GT R in certain races.
