Brianne Escamilla, 27 – the child’s mother – and her boyfriend, Matthew Urias, 26, were arrested June 28 and charged with first-degree murder, according to a press release from the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Urias was arrested on June 29, while Escamilla was taken into custody on July 5 in Littleton, Colorado.

Both are being held in the El Paso County Jail and could face additional charges.

A police affidavit obtained by the Colorado Gazette indicated the young girl had sustained at least 20 blunt injuries leading up to her death.

She allegedly suffered serious injuries, including contused lungs, broken ribs and various bleeding.

The affidavit revealed that the girl’s head was shaved at the time of her death – an act her mother and stepfather allegedly inflicted as punishment.

Both reportedly admitted to the abuse in several rounds of interrogation after their arrest, the Gazette reports.

It is believed that two days before her death, Emily began complaining to her mother and Urias about stomach problems.

She passed out a day later, but her mother allegedly denied her daughter’s pleas that the girl was “dramatic,” according to the affidavit.

The mother’s suitor is also said to have told police he hit the girl on the last day of her life – while admitting his “regret” at his abusive behaviour.

On January 13, Emily passed out again and passed out, prompting both parents to call 911.

Tragically, the girl died later in the day.

According to FOX 21 News, the parents continued to blame each other during heated police interrogations.

Escamilla allegedly told police that Urias would abuse Emily by picking her up by the ears and ribs.

She also allegedly claimed that Urias “hit Emily on the head three times in the bathroom” and regularly said that “it would be easier if Emily wasn’t there,” the outlet reports.

A witness also reportedly told authorities that she once saw Emily playing outside without a coat in cold weather.

When they asked why the girl wasn’t adequately clothed, the girl reportedly told the concerned neighbor that her mother locked her out of the apartment on purpose, according to Fox 21 News.

Following the devastating new details, Emily’s biological father, Manuel Canales, who lives in El Paso, Texas, described his heartbreak.

“She was just a beautiful little girl. She always said hello to everyone. I always wanted to talk to everyone,” he told KOAA News.

“I’m still in denial, still in denial, like I don’t want to believe that.”

He added: “It ruined my life, I wasn’t able to concentrate or work or do pretty much anything. I can hardly get out of this hole.”
