The suspect arrived at Cohasset Police Station around 2.30pm on Sunday, according to Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley.
Quigley said the man was known to the department.
He caused damage in the police station lobby, where he attempted to use a chainsaw to cut through the security doors.
Quigley said an employee pressed the panic button and retreated to a nearby office.

There she was able to call officials for help.
The employee was unharmed but shaken by the incident, Quigley said.
The man was then traced back to his place of residence.
The police station is about half a mile from where the suspect was then barricaded.
Quigley told local reporters that the man was at the home with his two children, both under the age of five.
A hostage negotiator reportedly spoke to the man.
According to NewsCenter 5, witnesses reported seeing the man with a chainsaw in the window of the house.
Massachusetts State Police told the outlet that their bomb squad responded to the scene.
However, Cohasset Police continue to patrol the scene.
The hostage-taking ended shortly after 8 p.m. local time.
Police entered the home and encountered the suspect, who was verbally abused by SWAT officers after resistance.
He was reportedly found in living quarters above the home’s garage.
Quigley said the suspect is in custody and being taken to a local hospital.

Both children were found unharmed and reunited with their mother.
“It’s the best possible result we could have hoped for,” said Quigley.
