The incident was reported by the Richland Police Department around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.

“RPD is working on an incident at Walmart involving a gun. The scene is safe and we will provide updates as they become available,” the department continued social media.

Just hours later, an update was provided by police stating: “RPD had a shooting at Walmart this evening involving an officer.

“All of our officers are safe. Walmart is currently safe and closed. MBI will conduct an independent investigation.”

A chilling video shared on social media shows a terrified worker being bossed around the store by the suspect.

Rankin County police and firefighters were heard saying, “Is she pointing a gun at people?”

A response followed: “The last thing I was told was someone came in with a gun yelling that they want a news anchor there. I’m trying to move on.”

It’s not known why the woman took the employee hostage, but officers said they were told the suspect went into the Walmart with the gun and demanded that news crews show up.

In the video, the woman could be heard screaming and saying she needed help and wanted to speak to a news anchor.

Corlunda McGinister, of West Helena, Arkansas, was shot dead by police after video showed officers telling her to raise her hands.

McGinister was heard saying that she didn’t mean to hurt anyone.

No one else was injured in the incident, Richland Police Chief Nick McLendon said.

“It’s devastating for everyone involved — the officers, everyone involved in this situation,” he said.

“You know, with the holiday season approaching, mental health is a big deal because of the stress that comes with the holiday season.”

He encouraged anyone struggling to seek help and said they could contact the Richland Police Department.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting involving officers.
