He hired two gunmen to kill 28-year-old Anni in his taxi in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2010 – and claimed her husband, British care home boss Shrien Dewani, was behind the plot.
Tongo – on parole after serving half of his 18-year sentence – cried: “Coming here for the first time has allowed me to acknowledge the damage I’ve caused.
“It’s on my mind every day. I want to say to her father that I am truly sorry that I had a hand in taking his daughter’s life.
“I hope he will have a long life and find peace.
“I’m trying to take responsibility for my crime and not forget the damage I caused to Anni’s family.
“Even as I move forward in my life, this day will always remind me: Remember what you did, Zola.
“Stay in your lane and make things right.”
Dewani’s trial failed in 2014.
The man who fired the fatal shot, Xolile Mngeni, received a life sentence and died in prison.
Kidnapper Mziwamadoda Qwabe is serving 25 years.
