Holland vs Ecuador – World Cup Group A: How they’re progressing, injuries and predictions ahead of the leaders clash

You can look forward to the duel between the leaders of Group A on Friday afternoon.

Holland and Ecuador both secured wins in their opening games and were tied on three points each.

Both clubs have ambitions to reach the last 16 as they are in the same group as Senegal and Qatar.

And while many pundits gave the hosts a place in the knockout rounds, Ecuador are in pole position to join Holland in the second half of this winter’s tournament.

A win for both sides would take them further, while ultimately a draw might be enough to take them both further.

How are you?

Holland: In short, solid if unspectacular.

The Dutch navigated past a tricky Senegalese side but needed two very late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen to take all three points.

Ecuador: Flew out of the gate after a quick double from Enner Valencia against hosts Qatar.

The South Americans didn’t allow early goals on another goal and looked lively, but took their foot off the accelerator – perhaps understandably – in the second half.

Any injuries to worry about?

Holland: None for Louis van Gaal… but he will probably make changes.

Among them, Memphis Depay is expected to play and Vincent Janssen will almost certainly take over in attack.

Ecuador: Worrying, yes. And it’s a big one.

Valencia are worried ahead of their second game after their opening day heroics, but coach Gustavo Alfaro is confident their leader will be fit to start.

Who will the star men be?

Holland: An extremely talented squad with a wealth of world-class talent but Virgil van Dijk will be key in this squad.

The hulking Liverpool centre-back will be tasked with keeping Valencia calm should he be fit and Holland’s success will start from the back.

Ecuador: This is this man, Valencia.

He looked unstoppable in the first half against Qatar but will face a much tougher task in Van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt and the like.

Moises Caicedo will also be crucial in this game to keep Ecuador going.
