LOVINGTON, New Mexico (Nexstar) – Alexis Avila, 18, appeared in court Wednesday to answer charges against her after police said she abandoned her newborn baby in a trash can on last weekend. The baby was later found by “scuba divers” and is now recovering at Lubbock Hospital.

Avila has been charged with attempted murder and placed under house arrest pending trial. A Lovington judge told Avila she would not be allowed to leave the house unless she was attending school, work or receiving medical care. She will wear a GPS tracker on her ankle while under house arrest.

Avila has also been ordered by the court to participate in the consultation. Those counseling sessions will begin tomorrow.

In addition, the judge told Avila that she was not allowed to use social media while under house arrest. She has also been ordered not to contact any witnesses involved in the case.
