Hobbs man launches fundraiser for abandoned baby

HOBBS, New Mexico (Nexstar) – The Hobbs community is regrouping after a baby was abandoned by its mother who was left for hours in the trash last weekend.

Joe Imbraile, owner of Rig Outfitters and Homestore, has launched a gofundme account in honor of the newborn and is hoping to raise 10,000 for the child. To date, more than $5,000 has been raised. Imbraile said the goal of the fundraiser was to show the baby that he was cared for by the community.

On January 7, three “trash divers” found the baby in a garbage truck outside Imbraile’s store. According to the Hobbs Police Department, the child was found inside a trash bag and had been in the trash for more than five hours. The child’s mother, Alexis Avila, 18, is facing two counts, including intentionally killing a child.

“This was the hand of God that protected that child for five and a half hours. Because the police said this baby shouldn’t have survived,” Imbraile said.

One donor wrote, “I hope (the baby) looks back and realizes that he was loved… and that he has a greater purpose in life. He was a warrior and a brave soul. “

Another wrote, “Precious little soul, your worth is immeasurable. Your beginning does not determine your end. Grow up! ”

Imbraile said he is working with an attorney to ensure the money goes directly to the baby, who is currently recovering at Lubbock hospital. If you want to contribute, you can do so here.
