HEROIC Ukrainian soldiers have repelled a massive Russian attack to retake part of the key city of Severodonetsk.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s forces have recaptured a fifth of the captured territory in the industrial heartland while battling Vladimir Putin’s thugs in eastern Donbass.
Lugansk Governor Serhiy Haidai hailed the achievement as a physical and psychological victory given the forces Russia has pumped into the region from other parts of Ukraine.
Analysts say that holding Severodonetsk would be seen as another failure for Putin after his troops were pushed back from Kyiv.
Officials said yesterday nine attacks in Severodonetsk had been halted in the past 24 hours. Air defense units shot down a cruise missile and three drones.
Ukraine hopes to soon receive deliveries of advanced missile systems that Britain and the US have committed to supply and on which their soldiers have begun training.
Mr Haidai said: “Once we have enough western long-range weapons, we will push their artillery away from our positions.
“And then, believe me, the Russian infantry will just run.”
He said Russia was dumping “all its reserves” on the city — making humanitarian shipments of food and medicine impossible.
The Defense Ministry said Moscow has had some tactical successes in Donbass after shifting its operational focus and resources away from Kyiv.
It comes as President Zelenskyy urged US cities to sever “twin ties” with everyone in Russia, like Chicago with Moscow and San Diego with Vladivostok.
In an online address to the US Mayors’ Conference, he told the US Mayors’ Conference, “Tyrants must have no ties to the free world.”
