A PLUCKY pod of dolphins saved a British swimmer from a 6ft shark planning a deadly attack.

Adam Walker claims the heroic creatures formed a protective circle around him to ward off the underwater beast in New Zealand.

The stunned guy from Nottingham had hit the open water hoping to fulfill his dream of swimming with dolphins in 2014.

The majestic mammals even exceeded Adam’s expectations after scaring off a great white shark heading towards him.

He claims he was told not to worry about sharks in the area by a mate and promised him a fear-free swim.

But in the depths of Cook Strait lurked a 6-foot beast, firing at an unsuspecting Adam hovering overhead.

Already battling heavy waves, he described the bath as “like swimming in a washing machine.”

The Brit could hardly believe his eyes when a pod of dolphins appeared and began circling him.

He believes that the intuitive animals noticed the deadly predator and decided to protect him while swimming in open water.

In a Facebook post describing his extraordinary experience at the time, Adam wrote: “A dream come true to swim with dolphins for over an hour…open water swimming doesn’t get any better than this!

“I would like to believe that they will protect me and guide me home. This swim will stay with me forever.”

He admitted he didn’t even notice the massive shark in the water and only realized it when he got out.

The swimmer told the Marlborough Express he wasn’t very happy with his mate after throwing his death dice and admitted he “had tried it when I got off”.

Dolphins are often attacked by sharks in the ocean and rely on each other for protection.

They tend to defend themselves against attacks by using their large snout to prod the predators by poking their underbelly or gills.

The organization Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) said: “The main advantage that dolphins have against shark attacks is safety in numbers; they stick together in groups and defend each other against a shark attack by chasing and ramming it.

“Dolphins are able to protect vulnerable members of their pods and extended families, such as juvenile dolphins and injured or sick dolphins.”
