AN officers face every parent’s worst nightmare while responding to Sunday’s fatal shooting. The victim turned out to be her biological child.
Officer Laquandia Cooley was working the night shift for the Hazlehurst Police Department when he received a call about a body in the middle of the street around 2am.
“We answered the call at first, not knowing when I got there, it would be my son lying there,” Cooley said.
Her son, 20-year-old Charles Stewart, Jr., was lying on the street after being shot in the head. He was dead by the time his mother arrived at the scene.
“When we went out, I looked and said, ‘This is my son, this is my son.’ So I really just went into a slump, you know? Like, why? Who will do this to my son? “
Cooley said it was a sight she will never forget.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I saw my son lying on the ground dead there,” she said. “It was a panic. It’s just, it was too much. ”
Cooley informed her son’s father, Charles Stewart, to tell him, “Someone killed our child,”
Mr. Stewart said his son is a friendly person who gets along with everyone. To learn of his son’s death was a complete shock.
“It hurts the whole family. We’re just trying to cope day by day. Just trying to figure out why this happened and who might have done this.”
Charles Stewart, Jr. is survived by his parents, a sister, and a 17-year-old brother.
“I’m lost,” his sister, Destinequa Hillard, wrote on Facebook. “How can anyone live after losing a brother or sister? I’m trying to be strong but I’m getting weak. I will never be able to see my brother again, whoever did this is wrong why lord why. ”
Because the case involved an officer’s family member, Sheriff Darian Murray said the case would be turned over to Mississippi Investigation Department.
