THE cause of death of an unidentified five-year-old boy whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase has been revealed in a heartbreaking update.
The boy’s body was found by a mushroom hunter in Indiana back in April, but no one knows how the child ended up there.
A funeral service in Salem for the “unknown angel” drew several mourners on Wednesday. Donations from residents and businesses helped with spending, Chaplain Todd Murphy said.
Last week, investigators determined the child’s cause of death to be an “electrolyte imbalance,” most likely “viral gastroenteritis.”
But mourners at the Weathers Funeral Home said it wasn’t the mystery of the child’s death that drew them to the service. Instead, they wanted to honor his life.
Despite not knowing his name, Murphy decided to name the child “Angel.”
“This unknown angel was loved by Washington County,” Murphy said. “So we’re going to call him ‘Angle’.”
Sgt. Matt Hein of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Angel has done so much for the community.
“We never knew him in life, but he brought us together with love and kindness,” he said.
The boy was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery with an angel marker. His tombstone reads: “In loving memory of a beloved little boy known only to God. Asleep in the arms of Jesus.”
The child’s body was found in a suitcase with Las Vegas tags scattered around rural Washington County on Saturday.
A mushroom hunter made the first discovery, Indiana State Police Sergeant Carey Huls told a Fox News affiliate in Kentucky.
The boy is described as a black boy, four feet tall, with a climbing build and short hair.
The search for answers to the case has spread across the country.
“We’re trying to spread this web as much as possible until we get this call, this information that leads to this lead to identification,” Huls told the news agency.
So far, no one has commented on who the boy was or who was taking care of him.
One of the main concerns of the police is to find out who is responsible for the child.
“Right now we need to know who that person or people responsible for him were so we can find out exactly what happened. And that will ultimately change the direction of this investigation,” Huls told the news outlet.
Police did not say whether third-party negligence was involved in the boy’s death.
“We’re obviously not going to do anything that might jeopardize our case, but people can take it at face value when you have a five-year-old child, they don’t take care of themselves,” Huls told the news outlet.
A local resident, who asked not to be named, commented on the boy’s death, calling it “heartbreaking”.
“Devastating for our community,” she told the news outlet. “How could anyone do such a thing to such an innocent child?”
The Indiana State Police Department has set up a tipster hotline for anyone who might know something about this case.
The number is: 1-888-437-6432.
