A MOTHER is under criminal investigation after footage emerged of her trying to sell her seven-year-old son in a shopping center for £4,000.
The woman, named Nargiza, 36, advertised the trade online, claiming she needed the money to pay off outstanding debts.
Officials from the anti-slavery charity, Alternativa, arrested the mother after responding to her complaint claiming to be the buyer.
A video clip shows the moment she met the “shoppers” in the food court of a mall in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
She brought the boy with her and said he “didn’t mind” being placed in a new family, they say.
The undercover operation to rescue the boy comes amid concerns in Russia over children being trafficked for sexual slavery or body parts involving organized criminal gangs.
“Right to the end we hoped it was a made up story, that it was some silly hoax or money scam,” a spokesman said.
“However, when our group, along with the members of the Organized Crime Investigation Team, went to the ‘deal’, we saw the boy being sold.
“Nargiza received the money and gave the child to someone she didn’t know,” they added.
After investigation, authorities claim the woman tried to sell her eldest son because her husband “didn’t like him”.
Sources suggest that the woman lived in a two-bedroom apartment with the man with whom she shares two children.
The boy she allegedly wanted to sell was from a previous partner.
The woman has now been jailed under Russia’s anti-child trafficking laws and her son has been taken for medical treatment.
It comes as Alternativa’s Oleg Melnikov previously warned of an increase in Russian women selling their children compared to previous years.
He said the women often blamed financial difficulties, but “low moral standards” were also to blame for their actions.
“We know that these children have no chance of getting legal documents,” he said.
“They end up in the hands of street beggars or pedophiles.”
Fears that children could also be trafficked for sex predators or body parts have been raised in several harrowing reports in recent years.
