Heartbreaking details emerge after police officers Maria Martin and Matthew Ethington, 22 and 26, were found dead at their home

TWO off-duty police officers were found shot dead in an apparent murder-suicide.
The officers, who were part of the Detroit Police Department, were spotted at their home in Livonia, Michigan on Sunday afternoon.

A family member asked police to conduct a welfare check, during which they found Maria Martin, 22, and Matthew Ethington II, 26, dead from gunshot wounds.
It is unclear when exactly the shooting took place.
Martin had multiple gunshot wounds and Ethington was shot once – the wound appeared to have been self-inflicted, police say.
Authorities also found a toddler in the home who was unharmed.

The baby was later given to a family member.
Martin and Ethington had been in the field for less than five years.
DPD boss James White said Sunday was “a sad day for our department”.
“We will have our chaplains here, our peer support team here, but none of that can take away any of the heartbreak that our officers are dealing with,” he said.
