He calls 911 to report an emergency about his mother. When the police arrive, he’s caught holding something really scary

Oliver Funes, 18, called 911 around 12:45 p.m. Monday to report that his mother had been killed at her home in Franklin County, North Carolina.

When police arrived, they saw Oliver walking down the street holding his mother’s severed head in one hand and a butcher knife in the other, the Daily Mail reports.

It turned out that Oliver was the one who killed 35-year-old Yesenia Funes Beatriz Machado. Police found her body in her home. Franklin County Sheriff Kent Winstead said Funes has been charged with first-degree murder in relation to the incident.

Funes was already in court at his first trial and he was held in prison without bond. According to Winstead, the boy has two younger sisters and he confirmed that they were present at the home when the murder happened but were unharmed. A fourth child was in school.

Police did not provide enough information as to what caused the mother’s death or what prompted Funes to execute his mother.

Ryan Reader, one of the family’s neighbors, told WBTW: “Complete shock. This whole area is a quiet area and I didn’t know what to expect when I got home and saw police cars and everything around me.”

Winstead said: “It looked like a large butcher knife, the weapon that was used. I can’t tell you how many stab wounds or lacerations there are. We just haven’t gotten that far in the investigation.”

He added: “It’s a terrible situation for the family, a terrible situation for the neighborhood and this county. I’m just glad things went the way they did and no one else was hurt when I took the suspect into custody.”

Terry Wright, chief of staff for the Franklin Sheriff’s Department, told ABC News, “We will be here for as long as it takes for a thorough search. We owe it to the victims to make sure everything is done right – to ensure that justice can be served once it arrives at the courthouse.”

Authorities removed the victim’s body from the home around 8:30 a.m. Investigators still had insufficient evidence or information to determine why the suspect killed his own mother.

Eddie Garner, one of the neighbors, told ABC of the time the husband got home: “It’s hard to understand. I don’t know what they told him. I mean we just heard him cry and you could hear him everywhere. I mean, he definitely never expected something like this to happen.”
