A HIKER sent his mother a terrifying final message before he was found dead at the foot of a rock notoriously dangerous waterfall after an 80-foot fall last week.

Calls for help reported April 30 on a mountain trail in the area of ​​the fall in Southern California helped alert the veteran hiker’s fall.

Authorities say the body of 33-year-old Robert Carey Jr. was discovered later that evening at the base of Big Falls.

NBC News reported that Carey’s mother, Bonnie Phillips, said her son sent her a series of messages.

She said her son, a bus driver in Los Angeles, told her he was on his way to the top of San Gorgonio Peak in the San Bernardino National Forest.

Phillips revealed a haunting text that read: “When you wake up, go out and look at the highest mountain you see out there. And I’ll be up there. Wish me luck.”

She also revealed the two exchanged texts hours later and that Carey said he was a mile from the summit, according to NBC.

Relatives said the California native is an experienced hiker but has never climbed the peak before, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

When Carey didn’t attend the family’s weekly Saturday night dinner on April 30, “I already knew something was terribly wrong,” Phillips also told NBC.

Authorities note that a helicopter crew was dispatched and spotted an unresponsive man at the base of the waterfall. A rescue operation was postponed on Saturday evening due to darkness.

On Sunday, May 1, “Members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office of the San Gorgonio Search and Rescue Team were hoisted down by helicopter and successfully recovered Carey’s remains,” the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators determined that Carey, of Calimesa in the greater Los Angeles area, fell about 80 feet to the base of the fall and died.

At about 11,500 feet, San Gorgonio Mountain is the tallest peak in California south of the Sierra, according to the USDA Forest Service.

Also known as “Old Grayback,” the mountain provides excellent altitude training for those preparing to climb Mt. Whitney, according to socialhiker.net, and is easily accessible from most Los Angeles and Orange counties reach.
