Has the real story behind The Watcher on Netflix ever been solved?

Netflix’s latest thriller may be a scripted series, but the true crime story that inspired it is seriously real. The Observer Hit the streamer today and it tells the chilling story of a family who buys a beautiful home in Westfield, New Jersey, only to be stalked by a mysterious person who sends them letters. What makes this real-life account so frightening is that the anonymous messenger knows things about the family that only someone close to them would know.

The Observer has a star cast including Oscar nominee Naomi Watts, Emmy nominee Bobby Cannavale, Emmy winner Jennifer Coolidge and Golden Globe winner and all-around icon Mia Farrow. The series is based on The Cut’s 2018 article originally titled The Haunting of a Dream House, which provides a thorough account of the case, including interviews with the family. We have no doubt that this new series will be hugely popular with streamers.

When you start watching The Observer and want to know the true story behind the show, we don’t blame you! It’s really mesmerizing and really scary. And most importantly, you may be wondering whether or not the stalker was ever caught. Did the police or family ever solve the case?

The Watcher Real-Life Story: Was the Stalker Ever Caught?

What makes this story all the more chilling is that The Watcher was sadly never caught. According to The Cut, the Broaddus family decided to sell the house six months after receiving the letters. The mystery was never solved, although there were many suspicions.

There was one suspect the family believed might be their stalker that they heard about at a barbecue. Derek found out about the Langford family who lived next door and consisted of an elderly Mrs. Peggy and their adult children. One of their sons, Michael, has been labeled as “kind of a Boo Radley character,” and based on that description, Derek thought he might very well be the person sending them the messages.

However, when the family brought this suspicion to a detective, they were told that Michael had already been produced for questioning and denied any involvement. After the police told them there wasn’t much they could do without evidence, Derek took it upon himself to investigate. After hiring a private investigator, the family discovered that two sex offenders lived nearby. Other suspicious activity from neighbors was observed. In principle, anyone can be suspected in the case.

After investigators subjected one of the letters to DNA analysis, they discovered something surprising. The DNA in one of the envelopes was from a woman. After that, Michael Langford’s sister Abby Langford was examined, but their DNA didn’t match. Prosecutors eventually completely ruled out the Langfords as suspects, although they didn’t disclose the reason.

Ultimately, although other people were identified as suspects, there wasn’t enough evidence to keep the case going. The riddle remains unsolved to this day. Some people even suspect that the Broaddus family sent the letters to themselves, perhaps to get out of a sale they couldn’t afford, or perhaps to sign a movie deal. Of course, this speculation has not been confirmed.
