But the wealthy family gave potential buyers until 22:00 GMT on Friday 17 February to place their bids.

It was reported that the Glazer family wanted £5bn to sell the English giants, despite their current £2.9bn worth.

And it seems like Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani could be the man to give them what they want.

Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, a member of the Gulf state’s ruling royal family, is seeking a full takeover of the Old Trafford club.

Sheikh Jassim, whose father Hamad is a former Prime Minister of Qatar, formally approached United’s bid oversight, US-based Raine Group, ahead of last night’s 10pm “soft” deadline.

In a statement issued on his behalf by a senior London PR firm, Sheikh Jassim said he plans to “return the club to its former glory on and off the pitch”.

The statement added: “The bid will above all seek to put fans back at the heart of Manchester United Football Club.”
