The seven-time Wimbledon champion returned for the first time since she had to pull out of the tournament last year through injury.

But she couldn’t clear the first hurdle despite digging deep on center court.

Serena waved to ecstatic British fans as she exited the arena following her loss.

Her advanced years mean she could be nearing retirement in the near future.

She has won 23 Grand Slam titles and will go down in history as one of the greatest to ever pick up a racquet.

But Serena could play at the US Open in New York later this year.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, she insisted she had not retired and had not timed her injury return to say goodbye at Wimbledon.

She said: “I didn’t retire – I just needed to heal physically and mentally.

“To be honest, I had no plans. I just didn’t know when I would come back.

“How I would come back. Wimbledon is such a great place and it just worked.”
