Jeffrey Toobin made headlines in 2020 after he was caught masturbating on a Zoom call about a presidential election podcast for WNYC and The New Yorker.

According to his colleagues, Toobin is said to have tilted the computer camera, touched himself and blown kisses at someone who was not among his colleagues.

He was subsequently suspended by the New Yorker, and its editor, David Remnick, released a statement to staff about the incident, which said: “As you may have read in various news reports today, one of our writers, Jeff Toobin, was killed following an incident on a Zoom call last week.

“Please rest assured that we take such matters seriously and are investigating. Best regards, David.”

Shortly thereafter, the author was fired from the New Yorker after 27 years.

Has Jeffrey Toobin left CNN?

While the New Yorker fired Toobin in the wake of the scandal, CNN took a different tack.

Toobin, who joined CNN in 2002, was not fired from his job as senior legal analyst, but was instead on leave until June 10, 2021.

A CNN statement said: “Jeff Toobin has requested time off while he attends to a personal issue, which we have granted.”

A source revealed at the time that he was “too good to fire”.

They said, “He’s one of the biggest faces on the network” and “too valuable an asset” to let him go.

Toobin was able to return to the network for an interview with Alisyn Camerota.

The legal analyst, who is married to Amy McIntosh, announced he has apologized for his mistake and is trying to make amends.

Additionally, on August 12, 2022, Toobin announced on Twitter that he was leaving CNN for good.

His tweet specified: “Friends I have decided that I am leaving @cnn after 20 years after my vacation. Was great to spend my last day on the air with my friends Wolf, Anderson and Don.

“I love all my former colleagues. Watch out for my next book about the Oklahoma City bombing, coming in 2023 by @simonandschuster.”

What did Jeffrey Toobin say about the incident?

On June 10, 2021, Toobin made his first CNN appearance since the scandal and admitted he “didn’t think.”

Toobin apologized in a statement, saying: “I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake believing I was off camera.

“I apologize to my wife, family, friends and colleagues.”
