Maguire admitted the Three Lions didn’t have the confidence to triumph when they reached the semi-finals when France won Russia in 2018 – but now they do.

The centre-back said: “There’s a big difference with the 2018 squad. We really believe it’s possible. I played in 2018 and we reached the semifinals and a lot of guys were happy to be there.

“We knew whatever was going to happen in that game, we were going to go home as heroes, get a good reception and everyone would pat us on the back.

“Now we believe that we have to win this tournament. It’s a good mentality change.

“Of course we know how tough it will be.

“There are probably five or six teams with the same belief. But in 2018 we were probably not one of those teams. Now there are five or six and we are one of them.”

Maguire and his team have conceded just two goals in Qatar – both in their opening 6-2 win over Iran – without conceding against the United States, Wales and Senegal.

The former Leicester defender, who is set for his 53rd Three Lions game, had a nightmare season at United – he barely played and many fans felt he should not have been picked for Qatar.

Maguire was booed in England’s 3-0 win over Ivory Coast at Wembley in March but still feels supported by the majority of the supporters.

He said: “I know the England fans have always been with me.

“They were amazing and always chanted my name which gave me confidence and faith. I repaid them with many good memories.

“I’m a fan of England myself. My country means everything and it’s a great honor every time I put on the jersey. I think the fans see that.”

Meanwhile, a relieved Maguire has revealed that England players’ families are loving the World Cup in Qatar.

Maguire’s father Alan suffered broken ribs at the Euro 2020 final at Wembley which were curled up in chaotic scenes, while Eric Dier won’t let his mother go to games over abuse.

But Maguire said: “My family has given high praise to everything to do with the tournament.

“The access, the travel to the games, the fans in the stadium, the atmosphere among the English fans.

“You really enjoyed it and you feel more comfortable knowing you don’t have to worry.

“As players, we don’t want to worry about such things. We want to focus on football.”
