HARRY KANE has made a spirited defense of Gareth Southgate after criticism of his tactics and selection.
Southgate’s Three Lions are bottom of their Nations League group and must beat Hungary in Molineux on Tuesday night – or face relegation to the second division for next year’s EURO qualifier draw.
But Skipper Kane said: “I can’t praise Gareth enough. He’s a fantastic manager and person and we’re all looking forward to being together at another big tournament.”
England have only two draws and a penalty from Kane in their first three Nations League games.
But the Spurs forward is stunned by the stick dished out by the likes of TV pundit Gary Lineker.
He said: “We’ve been one of the most successful English teams in the last 50 years, so we’re definitely on the right track.
“If you look at where we were in 2016 compared to now, we’ve made massive improvements and progress.
“We have overcome many hurdles in major tournaments by doing things that no English team has done in a long time.
“Obviously we haven’t won anything yet so there’s still room for improvement – and maybe criticism is part of it if England don’t win for a couple of games.
“But I’ve been with Gareth since U21 and he really understands what the England team needs to be successful.

“We raised a really good family here and have a good connection with the fans. So we will keep trying to improve and make the country proud.”
Boss Southgate has no illusions about the consequences if he finishes bottom in a Nations League group that also includes Germany and Italy.
He said: “This group that we’re in is tougher than most and that’s a consequence of the last Nations League.
“If we’ve had good draws in the past, it’s because we’ve played well over a long period of time.
“Likewise, if we don’t get the points we want this time, then we will suffer.
“But it’s not the main concern. There must be bigger goals than that.”
