Harry Kane, inspired by former idols David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, as captain of the England World Cup team

HARRY KANE draws inspiration from former idols David Beckham and Wayne Rooney as he chases World Cup glory.

Kane spoke to former England captain Beckham when the Goldenballs visited the team’s training base during the group stage.

And after coming within one goal of Rooney’s all-time Three Lions record, the Spurs forward revealed how another skipper predecessor is propelling him to greatness.

Kane, who famously met Beckham as a child, said: “Becks went to my secondary school, the Chingford Foundation. We both played for Ridgeway Rovers, our Sunday league team.

“He was my biggest idol growing up. He was here the other day. We had a good chat.

“He was one of the best captains we’ve ever had.

“I wasn’t just asking questions about games or how he was feeling, just getting to know his experience, how he thinks about our team, what he sees in our team.

“We talked about many things. He’s really looking forward to the national team. He loves to see us play.

“It’s great to have support from former players. You know how much it means to represent your country. They are all part of the team.”

Beckham visited the England squad following a training session at the invitation of Three Lions boss and former international team-mate Gareth Southgate.

HOW TO GET FREE BETS ON THE WORLD CUP

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar Beckham has won 115 caps.

And the Goldenballs’ free-kick winner in their last-16 win over Ecuador at the 2006 finals means he’s still the only Englishman to have scored in three different World Cups.

Becks also scored against Colombia in 1998 and as a winner against Argentina in 2002 and appeared at Euro 2000 and 2004.

But he experienced “the worst moment of my career” when he was sent off for an irritated kick against Diego Simeone against Argentina in 1998, sending England out on penalties.

Kane, 29, was never allowed to play alongside Beckham but was on the pitch when Rooney broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s goal record with a penalty against Switzerland in 2015.

That was Rooney’s 50th international goal and the Manchester United legend has netted 53 goals in 120 appearances.

Kane’s rocket shot in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Senegal puts him on 52 – and he has his sights set on Saturday’s World Cup quarter-finals against France.

Kane said: “The record wasn’t something I thought about at first.

“I played when Wayne Rooney broke the record and saw how much it meant to him.

“A few months later he was presented with a trophy (to commemorate the record) and he said he wanted me to present it because he thought I was going to go and break the record.

“Praise from him, someone I’ve looked up to all my life watching and playing with England, meant a lot to me.

“When he said that, I thought, ‘Maybe I can achieve that.'”

Kane’s goal against Senegal put him ahead of Gary Lineker by 11 goals as England’s most prolific striker in major tournaments.

Kane told the Lions’ Den with M&S Food: “It’s hard when you’re there and you’re thinking about the next game, thinking about France and coming through.

“When I’m done playing I’m sure I’ll look back and be very proud and I’ll be very proud when I break the record.

“If I was watching as a teenager I would be so excited and in awe, but it’s a different feeling when you’re in the middle of it.

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done, he keeps pushing you.

Kane about Henderson

“If it could be done at this tournament it would be nice as it would probably mean the team did well too – we’ll have to see.

“It was nice to get that against Senegal and get a step closer.”
Kane does his best to meet and exceed the standards set by the two former England captains.

But he also appreciates the role Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson plays as he and the team attempt to become Qatar heroes.

Henderson – a Champions League and Premier League winner with Liverpool – got England going with the opening goal against Senegal, and Kane said: “Hendo is one of the best leaders I’ve played with.

“He’s very vocal, he pushes the players to do their best and that’s why he was great.

“He is outstanding with and without the ball and drives everyone. The way we’ve been pushing, it’s good to hear how he’s pushing you.

“We have different types of leaders – we have maybe four or five different types of personalities, but people have big personalities and he’s one of them.

“And it doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done, he keeps pushing you.

“It was great for him to score and a lot of the good things we’ve done are thanks to his role in the team.”
