Harry and Meghan’s public denunciation of the royal family goes a step too far, says Ulrika Jonsson

YOU can’t choose your family.

I’ve certainly learned this over the years with my somewhat disjointed, dysfunctional extended family, and to that end I’ve chosen to make my good friends my “family” instead.

It’s gotten a lot more enjoyable and definitely more unconditional.

I don’t like perfection. I’m always a bit insecure about families who are all best friends and never say a snide remark about each other.

Maybe it’s because I’m tainted by my own experience, where loyalty has often gone out the window and honesty becomes ammunition.

Honesty is my currency – I don’t like being forced to hold back my feelings just because they’re family and being told that it’s not “never agreed” to speak up.

Families are a diverse combination of personalities with flaws and traits that often combine to create fireworks.

I have never known anything else. I may not like all aspects of everyone in my family environment, but it brings colour, shadow and sometimes – if you’re lucky – some light.

Harry and Meghan’s public denunciation and criticism of (mainly) the royal family is a step too far for even a die-hard, objective, hard-nosed family expert like me.

I think that’s because they don’t directly convey their honesty to the people involved.

They’ve instead opted for the far more financially affordable option of telling Netflix their truth.

If only that were an option for all of us. Wouldn’t that be great?
